To start off with, what did you enjoy most about your business apprenticeship?
There were a lot of interesting things however, the academic side of what the general business entails was probably the highlight.
What would you say were the most interesting learning moments?
I never realised what the day to day running of the office was like and how busy it could genuinely be. Even though I would be in the office occasionally growing up, I thought mum and dad were overexaggerating when they came home at the end of a full-on day.
Although you’re part of a family business, were there any unexpected things you discovered during your apprenticeship?
Learning about how ‘PESTLE’(Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental) affects the business. For example political - Brexit - has caused issues to our business due to price increases and a lack of availability from our European suppliers. In relation to the price increases, we have, reluctantly, had to pass these on to our customers as we could no longer absorb the costs.
What do you think are the unique selling points of Lockwood Windows?
Firstly, we are the only company in Huddersfield who manufacture and install Kommerling premium quality UPVc windows and doors. Also, we don’t have any sales representatives and all our fitters are employed by the company. So, we’re proud to offer a fully comprehensive design, manufacturing and fitting service from start to finish.
Since working for Lockwood what are the biggest changes that you’ve seen?
Since I started working for Lockwood full time I've introduced a new way of placing orders, meaning there was less paper trail and more digital trail of orders. Also, the new flush style windows have been a great addition to our extensive catalogue of products.
What would your advice be to people looking to invest in new windows and doors?
If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact us, also come down to the showroom and we'll be happy to help! We have most composite door and UPVc window styles and colours on display, so it’s easier to decide what you’re looking for when you’re here in person.
Do you think customers are aware of the various benefits of UPVc windows and composite doors?
Some people know but we always make sure to explain the benefits of UPVc and composite products, in particular their energy efficiency. This is the reason we always encourage people to come down to the showroom so we can show and explain to them in detail and answer any other questions they may have.
Lockwood offers many different types of design - do you have a personal favourite in terms of design or colour?
My favourite door styles are the Flint range and my favourite colours are Painswick and Cream. I like the more traditional style of windows with duplex bars in.
Looking forward to the next 10 years, what do you predict will be the key trends in the doors and windows industry?
Most probably a different selection of colours for the new flush sash windows range and new traditional composite door styles to emulate the traditional wooden door styles. Also, the changing of the new building regulations in 2025 means that all windows and doors will have to be even more efficient than they are today.
Now we've learnt about Ella a little more, if you come down to the showroom to view our extensive range of products you’ll more than likely see her at the front desk - so please do come and say hello! Also, if you’re still browsing colours and designs, download our brand new brochure to help you make that all-important decision.
